    Origin

Coined by Hungarian-born Australian sports journalist Les Murray. Popularised by the Murray-presented television show of the same name. In reference to the sport's popularity across the world, in comparison with the relative global unpopularity of some of Australia's other popular sports (eg Australian rules football and rugby league) and the relative local unpopularity of association football.
