Origin
Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *l'uːds): semantic 阜 + phonetic 㒸 (suì).
Schuessler (2007) tentatively suggests comparisons with 遹 (OC *ɢʷid, “to follow”), as well as an areal word family represented by Khmer ទ័ព (tŏəp, “army”), based on superficial semantics and a reconstruction of the Old Chinese as *duus.
However, based on reconstructions by Zhengzhang and Baxter-Sagart, compare instead Burmese လုတ် (lut, “mouthful of food”), which is a much stronger phonetic match and semantically reasonable (as a "grouped unit").
