Origin
The character 中 is a pictogram. In its original form 𠁩, it depicts a flagpole, which archaeological evidence suggests may have included a drum (建鼓) placed in the center of a field. Some interpretations also view the character as an arrow in the center of a target. The Shuowen Jiezi describes it as a vertical stroke 丨 passing through the center of 口, signifying the center.
Inherited from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *t/duŋ, the character is a cognate of the Tibetan གཞུང (gzhung, “middle, center”). It is related to 衷 (OC *tuŋ, *tuŋs) and 仲 (OC *duŋs). Through its meanings of "middle" or "center," the term also evolved to mean hitting the center or attaining something.
In addition to its primary meanings, the character can refer to being in the process of something, being among, or being within. It can also mean to coincide, to suffer, or to obtain.
