Origin

Multiple theories exist regarding its primary sense:

* One traditional view (e.g., Shuowen) interprets it as a reversed form of 司 (OC *slɯ, “to manage; to command”), depicting a person issuing decrees from within (symbolized by 口 (OC *kʰoːʔ, “mouth”)), with the original meaning of "sovereign; ruler" (such as the Xia dynasty rulers). However, this view is considered questionable in contemporary paleography.

* Another theory (e.g., Wang Guowei) posits a phonetic and semantic connection with 毓 (OC *luɡ, “to give birth”). Wang argued that the sense of "monarch" extended from the notion of 繼嗣 ("continuing the lineage"). Crucially, while the character 毓 (OC *luɡ) graphically depicts a woman giving birth (a head-down delivery), the oracle bone form of 后 does not share this visual depiction; this connection is just phonological and etymological, rather than a direct graphic evolution.

* Recent epigraphic studies suggest that oracle bone forms of 后 and 司 were largely interchangeable, often functioning as 司 in sacrificial contexts rather than representing 后. See also the ongoing debate regarding 后母戊鼎.

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *mV-qow (“head”). Cognate with Tibetan གོ (go, “head; headman”), མགོ (mgo, “head, top, beginning”).
