Origin
地 is a phono-semantic compound inherited from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *mV-lej. It consists of the semantic component 土 (earth; soil) and the phonetic component 也. One of the earliest versions of the character is 𡓬 (later 墬), which contains visual elements of a hill, a pig, and a mound of earth. The Shuowen Jiezi states that the character follows the component 土 for meaning and 也 for sound, describing the earth as the heavy, turbid Yin that forms in opposition to the light, clear Yang of the heavens.
This character is a cognate of the Tibetan གཞི (ground) and the Burmese မ္လိယ်, which is the source of the Burmese word မြေ (earth; ground). Some scholars suggest it may be the same word as the possessive marker 的, though others are hesitant about this connection. Alternatively, it is proposed that the character underwent grammaticalization from its primary meaning, where a construction like "a ADJ place" evolved into "in a ADJ manner."
In its various meanings, the character refers to the earth, ground, floor, land, or field, as well as distance and separation. It can represent the place where all living things inhabit and grow, the planet Earth, or specific locations and fields. The character appears in bronze, chu, qin, seal, and regular scripts.

(OC *laːlʔ). One of the first versions of this character is 𡓬 (> 墬), in which a hill, a pig and a mound of earth are visible; visually, the upper part of the variant is 䧘.
Compare Tibetan གཞི (gzhi, “ground”), Burmese မ္လိယ် (ma.liy) (whence Burmese မြေ (mre, “earth; ground”)) (Hill, 2019). From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *mV-lej.
Possibly the same word as 的, the possessive marker (Wang, 1958), but scholars like Lü (1943) and Yuan et al. (1996) are hesitant about this etymology.
Alternatively, Ōta (2003) proposes that it is a grammaticalization of etymology 1. The construction ADJ + 地 would have semantically developed as follows: "a ADJ place" → "in a ADJ place" → "in a ADJ manner".
